Bring Your Own ELD to DocuDrive

If a Pacific Track PT-30 or PT-40 is already plugged into your truck, you can switch software without buying new hardware.

  • FMCSA-registered (ELD ID DDL996)
  • $20/truck, GPS included
  • No contract

Quick answer

If you own a Pacific Track PT-30 or PT-40, you can move it to DocuDrive with no hardware purchase. Sign up for the $20 per truck per month plan, which starts with a 14-day free trial, and we move the device to DocuDrive while you keep driving. Have another brand of device? Call (720) 362-3783 and ask before you sign up.

Which devices you can bring

DocuDrive supports two Pacific Track devices for bring-your-own:

  • PT-30: a Bluetooth ELD that uses the driver's phone for location.
  • PT-40: an ELD with built-in GPS and its own LTE cellular connection.

The model name is usually printed on the device's label. If you have a different device, call (720) 362-3783 and ask before you sign up so you know where you stand.

How the switch works

  1. Sign up for the $20 plan. Start at /buy/ and choose the bring-your-own option. You get the same 14-day free trial as everyone else, and no hardware charge.
  2. We move the device to DocuDrive. Tell us which device each truck has. We handle moving it over to DocuDrive.
  3. Your driver logs into the DocuDrive app. Install the DocuDrive driver app, sign in, and connect to the device in the truck. The installation guide covers pairing and the checks to run before the first trip; the steps apply to a PT-30 as well.
  4. Keep driving. The device stays plugged in. Nothing to unbolt, nothing to mail back to us.

Billing at $20 per truck per month starts on day 15. It is month-to-month with no contract, and it includes GPS tracking, HOS logs, DVIR, IFTA mileage reports, Inspection Mode, the web portal, and U.S.-based support. Full detail on the pricing page.

Your old provider is a separate matter

Moving the device does not cancel your account with the provider you are leaving. Any contract, early termination fee, or hardware return clause in that agreement is between you and them. Read it before you switch so you are not billed twice or charged for a device you thought you owned.

A few things to check in the old agreement:

  • Is the device yours, leased, or rented? Some providers expect leased hardware back.
  • How much notice does cancellation require, and how do they want it sent?
  • Is there an early termination fee if you are still inside a contract term?

The Cancel an ELD Contract guide covers how to handle this, and Switch ELD Providers covers timing the move so there is no gap in your logs. Before you leave, save copies of your logs and supporting documents from the old system. A carrier must keep records of duty status and supporting documents for at least 6 months (49 CFR 395.8(k)).

Keeping a PT-30: the honest trade-off

A PT-30 is an FMCSA-compliant ELD, and plenty of carriers run one without trouble. The thing to know is where its location comes from. The PT-30 has no GPS of its own. It uses the driver's phone for location and for the connection back to the office.

When the phone is with the driver, charged, and connected, that works. When the phone dies at a shipper, gets left in the sleeper, or goes home with the driver, location reporting stops until the phone comes back. If you run broker-tracked loads through Highway or Trucker Tools, those gaps show up on the broker's screen.

If you want the truck itself to report its location, upgrade to a PT-40 for $149 one time, with free shipping. It has built-in GPS and LTE, so position keeps flowing whether or not the phone is in the cab. The full comparison is on PT-30 vs PT-40.

What changes for your drivers

Less than you might expect. The device in the truck is the same, so there is nothing new to plug in or mount. What changes is the app on the phone. Drivers install the DocuDrive driver app, log in with their new credentials, and connect to the device.

Give each driver ten minutes in the yard before the first trip on DocuDrive. Have them change duty status, fill out a DVIR, and open Inspection Mode so they know where the Send button is before an officer asks for logs. Swap the in-cab instruction sheets for DocuDrive's versions at the same time, since the data transfer steps differ from provider to provider. The ELD cab card page lists what belongs in the cab.

Fleets and adding trucks

Fleets can mix brought devices and new PT-40s. Fleets of 5 or more trucks can buy online or contact sales at sales@docudriveapp.com for volume pricing. Once you are a customer, you add trucks from the billing portal.

Common questions

Is there a fee to move my PT-30 or PT-40 to DocuDrive?

There is no hardware purchase when you bring your own PT-30 or PT-40. You pay the same $20 per truck per month as any customer, after the same 14-day free trial.

Will my old ELD provider cancel automatically when I switch?

No. Your agreement with the old provider is separate. Check their contract for notice periods, termination fees, and whether the hardware has to be returned, and cancel with them directly.

Does a PT-30 track the truck's location?

It records location through the driver's phone, since the PT-30 has no GPS of its own. If the phone is off or out of the cab, location stops updating until the phone reconnects.

Can I upgrade from a PT-30 to a PT-40 later?

Yes. You can buy a PT-40 for $149 one time with free shipping at any point. It adds built-in GPS and LTE so the truck reports location without relying on the phone.

What if my ELD is not a PT-30 or PT-40?

Call (720) 362-3783 and ask before you sign up. If your device is not one DocuDrive supports, the PT-40 is $149 one time, ships free, and is yours to keep.
